Germany vs Finland

Jen, I'm sorry I offended your sensibilities. I wasn't paying attention. A man was climbing into the ceiling above my desk. And you DO have funny hospitals in Finland, so it was a logical jump to assume that you said "hospital for blind people in Finland" Sorry.

Comments

Wow, I didn't even know I was getting comments on this page: I just read them all. I've got it set up like the other page now, so I'll be more in touch.

Ruth: the creme eggs came through fine, but the surprise egg did not (schade!).

Jen: Yes. I think the hotel for the blind is lovely. Why does your country have so many specialty hospitals?

Jena: Still waiting for that Ramada Inn Story.

This was supposed to happen on Sunday

Well, Sunday has come and gone. I sat down at my computer to upload these postcards but couldn't get online. Humph. Here they are now. Thanks everyone. Stay tuned: I'll be uploading the captions tonight.

New Postage Rates

Time to stock up on Forever Stamps--the ones with the liberty bell on them that hold their value even when postage rates change.

The price of postage is going up yet again--but still it's a bargain when you really consider this:

I take a piece of paper (a postcard) and I put a sticker on it. The sticker costs me 27 cents (or 28 cents after the hike). For that 27 cents, the postal service will pick that piece of paper up and transport it thousands of miles to its destination.

What else can I get for 27 cents? Half a load of laundry. 1/8 of a gallon of gas (or about half a trip to school). 1/3 of a soda. 1/2 of a newspaper. You get it. It's still cheap.

I hope this extra money helps and keeps them from thinking we don't need mail on Tuesday.

Other changes taking effect May 11:

• The postcard stamp increases 1-cent to 28 cents.

• The first ounce of a large envelope increases 5 cents to 88 cents.

• The first ounce of a parcel increases 5 cents to $1.22.

• New international postcard and letter prices are, for one ounce, 75 cents to Canada; 79 cents to Mexico; and 98 cents elsewhere.

IN OTHER NEWS: I have a stack of about 20 postcards I've gotten in the past week that I'm going to scan and post. I can't keep up with the volume of mail I receive anymore, so I'm going to start posting them every Sunday. Can you stand the wait? Keep sending those cards, I get them, and I love them.

RUTH:

Your post is absolutely DELICIOUS! I will put up a picture of that card you sent soon--everyone needs to see that :). Thanks.

I've been behind.

I got a package from my Mom with all my mail from Idaho yesterday. Here are the cards that came (and some that I've gotten in Miami too):

Wrigley Field, where the Chicago Cubs play.

I have no Idea what this is. It's delightful though. It's from the Chalet Staff and apparently there's a story about it...Jen?

These Phoenix cards are from the same Postcrossing guy--he couldn't decide which to send, so he sent both.

From Austria...I guess they're the characters from some old childrens' show there.
From Jen's friend. Lovely city scene.

From Jen. I think it's probably a picture of her as a child, but she won't fess up.
Also from Jen. The loveliest building in Heinola.
From Heather and Allison. I love it.
Last, but not least. This GEM is from Jena. Seriously Jena, where do you find these things? This one is Ugly AND religious...amazing.

5 days a week!

The postal service is considering suspending delivery on Tuesdays in order to remedy a budget shortfall caused by lower mail volume.  So says the Miami Herald this morning.

What will I do?!  It's bad enough that i have to wait from Saturday to Monday for my postcards...now Monday to Wednesday?

This will probably never happen though, because there is a Law that says mail delivery must occur 6 days of the week.  Phew!  But to even consider it makes me twitchy.

Hospitals Make Good Postcards

Rhuematism hospital in Heinola, thanks Jen's Granny.

Georgina Skiing.
Postcrossing post from Sweden. What does it say Jen?

Yay!

Received 3 postcards today:From Jen, a concert house in Lahti Finland.

Postcrossing, from Sweden. Rovaniemi is the city in Finland where Santa Clause lives...shh right. Santa lives at the North Pole.

From Czech Republic. Brno. A medieval castle.

Stats

I have not gotten a postcard for Days. I own 235 blank postcards.

I got a postcard from Freemantle West Australia a few days ago--Ani will be playing a concert there soon--but it didn't have a secret postcrossing postcard code on it, so I don't know who it's from! Could be a completely anonymous secret admirer who only wants to tell me about the fabulous delis and cafes on mainstreet? Which has not changed for the past 100 years by the way.

Stay tuned for the resolution of this mystery--if there is any.
